My Safe Florida Home · Grant guide

The My Safe Florida Home grant, explained without the sales pitch.

Florida will pay for a wind mitigation inspection on your home, and — if you qualify and funding is available — put up to $10,000 toward hardening it. It is a genuinely good program that is also genuinely oversubscribed.

This page explains how it actually runs, in order, so you know what you are signing up for before you start. We are a licensed general contractor, not the program — we do the work after the state approves it.

What it is

A free inspection first, a grant second.

My Safe Florida Home is run by the Florida Department of Financial Services. It does two separate things, and conflating them is where most confusion starts. First, it provides a free wind mitigation inspection — a licensed inspector documents how your home is built and what would make it more resistant to wind. Second, for qualifying homeowners, it offers grant funding of up to $10,000 toward the improvements that inspection recommends.

The inspection has value even if no grant ever follows. Florida law requires insurers to give credit on the windstorm portion of your premium for qualifying construction features, and the wind mitigation report is the document that proves what you have. Plenty of homeowners find they were already entitled to a discount nobody applied.

The process

Seven steps, in order.

01

Create your account

Sign up on the state's participant portal. You'll verify an email address and set a password — the portal is where every later step happens.

02

Complete the prioritization questionnaire

A short survey about your home's condition. It determines how you're scheduled, not whether you qualify.

03

Wait for an inspection group

The state sorts homeowners into inspection groups and emails you when you've been placed. This is the step that takes patience.

04

Complete the inspection application

Once you're in a group, you confirm home details, contact information and your availability.

05

Take the free wind mitigation inspection

An authorized Florida wind mitigation inspector visits the property. There is no charge for this.

06

Read your report

You get a written report listing recommended improvements and what you may be eligible for. Send a copy to your insurer regardless of what you do next.

07

Apply for the grant

If your home qualifies, you submit a grant application for approved upgrades — roof improvements, impact windows and doors, garage door reinforcement, or a secondary water barrier.

Applications, status and current open windows all live on the state's portal. Start there — mysafeflhome.com. No contractor can submit or expedite your application, and anyone who says otherwise is telling you something untrue.

Straight talk

Three things worth knowing before you start.

The queue is the hard part

Demand has consistently outrun funding, and large numbers of homeowners have held completed inspections while waiting for grant money to be appropriated. Get in the queue early and treat the timing as genuinely uncertain.

Eligibility moves

Income limits and program rules have changed between cycles. Do not plan a renovation budget around a grant you have not been awarded, and re-check the official criteria rather than a contractor's blog post.

The state does not warrant your contractor

The program is explicit that disputes over workmanship are between you and the contractor you chose. Use a licensed Florida contractor and get several bids — the program itself recommends comparing at least three.

Where we fit

We do the work, not the paperwork you own.

Bring us your inspection report and we will price the recommended scope line by line — impact windows and doors, roof improvements, garage door reinforcement, secondary water barrier — under Florida general contractor license #CGC1541275. You get an itemized proposal you can hand to the program, permits pulled in your jurisdiction, and closeout documentation.

We work all of South Florida, with market pages for Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Naples and Fort Lauderdale.

Questions

My Safe Florida Home — common questions.

How much is the My Safe Florida Home grant?

The program advertises grants of up to $10,000 toward approved hurricane-hardening improvements, plus a free wind mitigation inspection. The grant is not automatic — it follows the inspection and a separate grant application, and the amount depends on the improvements approved for your home.

Do I qualify?

Eligibility has changed between funding cycles, and recent cycles have been limited to low- and moderate-income homeowners. Because the criteria move, check the eligibility tool on mysafeflhome.com rather than relying on any contractor's summary — including this one.

How long does it take?

Longer than most people expect. The program has been consistently oversubscribed, with tens of thousands of homeowners holding completed inspections while waiting on grant funding. Start the account and questionnaire early; the queue is the constraint, not the paperwork.

Does the grant pay Axiom directly?

The program is between you and the state — we are the contractor, not a party to your grant. We give you a written, itemized proposal for the approved scope, do the work under our license, and provide the documentation the program requires.

Is there a version for condominiums?

Yes. Florida runs a separate condominium pilot program for association-owned structures, which is a different application track from the single-family program.

Can I combine the grant with the $500 sales tax refund?

They are separate programs with separate rules, and the sales tax refund applies to tax you actually paid on qualifying products for a homestead property. Keep every invoice and permit record, and confirm the interaction with the Department of Revenue before assuming both apply to the same dollars.

Accuracy note. Program details on this page were verified against the official program materials in August 2026. My Safe Florida Home is a state program whose funding, eligibility and application windows change by legislative cycle. Axiom Construction does not administer it and cannot approve, deny or expedite an application. Confirm current terms at mysafeflhome.com before making a financial decision.
